Initial Consultation and Fertility Assessment
During your first consultation, we take the time to understand your individual situation, answer your questions, and discuss the options that may be suitable for you.
We begin with a fertility assessment, which typically includes an ultrasound examination of the ovaries and uterus, as well as hormonal testing.
What Treatment Options Are Available?
For female same-sex couples, the following treatment options are generally available:
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) with donor sperm
IVF or ICSI treatment with donor sperm
Legal Considerations
In Germany, fertility treatment using donor sperm is subject to specific legal regulations. Donors are provided through licensed sperm banks, and all treatments are documented in accordance with legal requirements.
Female same-sex couples should also be aware that the partner of the birth mother is not automatically recognized as a legal parent. Under current German law, legal parenthood is generally established after birth through a second-parent adoption process.
Costs and Financial Support
Coverage of fertility treatment costs by statutory health insurance is not automatically available for same-sex couples. However, residents of Berlin may be eligible for financial support through LaGeSo, provided the relevant requirements are met. Who is legally recognized as the child's mother?
The woman who gives birth to the child is automatically recognized as the child's legal mother. Following the birth, her partner can also be legally recognized as a second mother through a second-parent adoption process.
Can we attend appointments together?
Yes, absolutely. We recommend that both partners attend the initial consultation so that medical, organizational, and legal questions can be discussed together. We also recommend obtaining legal and psychosocial counseling to ensure that, in addition to the medical information and guidance we provide, you receive comprehensive support and advice throughout the process.
