  • European Sperm Bank (ESB)

  • Cryos International • Berlin Sperm Bank (BSB)

  • SEJ Sperm Bank Berlin

How does the selection and ordering process work through a sperm bank?

After the initial consultation at our practice, you independently select a suitable donor through the respective sperm bank. You place the order for the so-called “straws” (cryopreserved sperm) directly with the sperm bank. It is important that the donor sperm arrives at our practice in time for the treatment. The sperm bank will inform you how many straws are required for your treatment method.

The samples are stored professionally at our facility. The storage costs for cryopreservation are €150 for 6 months (€25 per month).

On the day of insemination or IVF/ICSI treatment, the sample will be thawed and prepared with your consent.

Legal Framework in Germany

Treatment with donor sperm is subject to clear legal requirements in Germany and is carried out exclusively with sperm donations from licensed and certified sperm banks.

The Sperm Donor Registry Act (SaRegG) governs the documentation of the donation as well as the child’s right to know their parentage. Children conceived through sperm donation have the right to obtain information about the donor from the central registry starting at age 16.

Depending on your personal circumstances, additional legal steps may be necessary before or after birth, such as acknowledgment of paternity or stepchild adoption.

To ensure you receive comprehensive counseling regarding your individual situation, in addition to our medical information, psychosocial counseling (for example, through the BKid) and legal counseling with a family law attorney are prerequisites for treatment.

Costs and Financing

Treatment with donor sperm is generally a self-pay service, as health insurance typically does not cover the costs.

Private health insurance plans may cover a portion of the costs—however, this must be verified on a case-by-case basis.

The total costs consist of: costs for donor sperm, shipping and transport costs, storage costs, costs of medical treatment, laboratory costs, and medications.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same donor again later (for a sibling)?

In principle, it is possible to reuse samples from the same donor for another treatment—for example, for a sibling. This is contingent on samples from the same donor still being available at the sperm bank. If you’d like to keep this option open, you’re welcome to order multiple straws and store them with us.

How long can the donor sperm remain stored at the clinic?

Cryopreservation is automatically extended for an additional six months unless you cancel. Storage continues until the samples are used as part of treatment or you cancel the cryopreservation in writing. To cancel, we require written consent and a copy of your ID. To receive a cancellation form, please send us a request to info@wunschkinder-berlin.de.
